The UC Cup 2024 has wrapped up for another year with local ACT teams uniting with their interstate and international counterparts for an exciting three-day tournament across Canberra last week.
“We are thrilled with the success of the first UC Cup. It provided an excellent opportunity for teams to gear up for the upcoming season while displaying remarkable talent and sportsmanship," said Maddison McGarry, CACT Cricket Operations Coordinator and UC Cup Tournament Director.
This tournament is the second event under the partnership between the University and Cricket ACT, which was announced in February this year. The partnership aims to strengthen cricket legacies in Australia and India, foster cultural exchange, and promote inclusivity, especially for women and girls in the sport.
The first event under this partnership was the UC Cricket Challenge, held in India in August.
“The UC Cup showcased the sportsmanship and determination that are at the heart of cricket,” said Chris Gartner, the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Future Students.
“Sport is a vital part of UC’s culture, and tournaments like the UC Cup help us build and strengthen cross-national and cross-cultural relationships through a shared passion for cricket,” Mr. Gartner said.
“Our partnership with India also includes intensive training camps and information sessions in schools, aiming to nurture talent and explore pathways to university study at UC in Canberra.”
Formerly known as the Kookaburra Cup, the annual UC Cup is the largest junior pre-season tournament in the ACT.
The UC Cup featured 310 participants across various sporting ovals in Canberra, with a total of 31 teams. This included 22 local teams, seven from interstate, and two teams from Delhi and Punjab, India.
The international teams were brought to the ACT by the Canberra-based Adams Cricket Academy and former Indian all-rounder Madan Lal’s Cricket Academy from Delhi. These teams, hailing from Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Chandigarh, toured Australia to experience the national cricket scene.
