As the junior cricket season commences, Queanbeyan Junior Cricket Club is one of many examples showcasing the growth of cricket to young women and girls in the Canberra region. Over the past few years, the club has made remarkable strides in developing its junior girls cricket program, transforming it into a thriving community for young female cricketers.
In the 2021/22 season, the club was faced with a significant challenge: not a single junior girl had registered to play. However, the club’s leadership, driven by a commitment to providing clear pathways from entry-level to senior player for both males and females, took decisive action. They focused on creating a welcoming environment and offering robust support to encourage participation.
Fast forward to the 2024/25 season, and the results speak for themselves. The club now proudly boasts 17 registered junior girls, with expectations to exceed this number as the season progresses. This growth has enabled the formation of two teams for Stage 1 and Stage 2 junior girls, showcasing the club’s dedication to nurturing young talent.
Andy Newton, President of Queanbeyan Junior Cricket Club, reflects on this journey with pride.
“Our junior girl’s program has flourished thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of our players, coaches, and volunteers. It’s inspiring to see so many young girls enjoying cricket and developing their skills.” Andy said,
ACT Meteors captain Katie Mack recently joined in on a training session, showcasing to the young girls that there is a genuine pathway for young girls wanting to reach the highest level and play cricket on a national stage right here in Canberra.
Charlie Newton, a junior player at the club, shared her excitement about the upcoming season. “Playing cricket here has been an amazing experience. I’ve made so many friends and learned so much. I can’t wait for the new season to start.”
All junior clubs in Canberra are inviting more young girls to register to play junior cricket. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the sport, there’s a place for you.
