BROES & RAHMAN SEND ACT CRICKET RECORDS TUMBLING

On Saturday, 10 November in a First Grade match against Eastlake, Nic Broes and Raakin Rahman shared an opening stand of 241 runs, breaking the previous record of 202 set in 2017. The pair now rank second on the club's first-grade partnership list for any wicket after breaking several other records along the way. A third-wicket partnership of 346 (P Solway 211 & R Regent 123 against Weston Creek in the 1990–1991 season) tops the list.

“It’s unbelievable really. Being part of a great milestone in Canberra history and Queanbeyan history as well. Having our names on the board like a lot of the historians in Queanbeyan before us is, it’s absolutely unreal. It’s a great feeling and alongside Broie (Nic Broes) is crazy.” Rahman told Cricket ACT.

With an innings like this, the pair looked as though they had been batting together for years. But with Broes not living in Queanbeyan, he doesn’t spend much time in and around the squad.

“I don’t live in Queanbeyan, so I don’t come to training as much or at all. Our time together is only out in the middle, so we try to make the most of it when we’re together. I think we complement each other well like our games go together and we just enjoy batting together.” Broes said.

Well experienced ACT grade cricketer Nic Broes has been playing cricket in Canberra since he made the move when he was 18. In 2022-23  Broes made his debut for NSW Country/ACT Second XI team and plays first grade cricket for Queanbeyan District Cricket in the ACT Premier Cricket competition, as well as playing with the ACT Comets. With this experience behind him, nerves were no issue for him. The only nerves he had was ensuring his mate at the other end hit his first century.

“There’s not really many nerves I’ve got out in the 90s quite a bit, but no, no real nerves. I was more nervous for Raakin because he hadn’t hit 100 yet and that was his first so I was more nervous for him and just very pleased and proud of him when he finally got to the milestone. I think it’s more just we buzz off each other’s energy and just go with the flow.” Broes stated.

The nerves turned to cheers as Raakin Rahman reached his first century.

“Being able to score my first hundred for the club and breaking the record as well, having that history in Cricket ACT it’s really a great feeling.” Raakin claimed.

With a bright future and a big summer of cricket still to come, Rahman looks ahead to representing the ACT in the Under 19s National Championships.  

“Right now, I’m kind of focusing on the next little steps on the way. I’ve got the Under 19s nationals’ tournament so hopefully as a team in Cricket ACT we go really well there, putting our best foot forward. I think we’ve got one of the best sides as an age group in the last probably five years, so hopefully we can put our best foot forward. For me just I guess there’s little steps and again just see what the future brings as we go along.”
