The John Gallop Cup premier one-day cricket competition is set to conclude with an exciting Grand Final on Sunday, March 2nd. This year's final will feature a captivating matchup between Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club and ANU Cricket Club.
Cricket ACT spoke to Tuggeranong batsmen Akshay Joseph and ANU wicket-keeper Kieran Monger ahead of the big dance.
“We are very confident that as group this is where we deserve to be, and this is where we belong in these big fixtures. We are very confident heading into this one.” Monger told Cricket ACT.
“All the boys are really keen to get back on the field on Sunday and give it our best shot.” Joseph stated.
Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club is eager to win the John Gallop Cup after being defeated by Queanbeyan in the recent Men's 1st Grade Greg Chappell Cricket Centre T20 Blast Grand Final. TVCC has shown steady form throughout the season, displaying a well-balanced combination of seasoned players and up-and-coming prospects. Finishing in third on the ladder, has made them one of the most formidable opponents this year.
“I think finals experience does help in just being calm under pressure. A lot of our team has played finals cricket so I believe it definitely will help us.” Joseph stated.
ANU on the other hand last won the John Gallop Cup back in the 1996/97 season. Finishing the regular season in 4th, aggressive batting and disciplined bowling have been hallmarks of their journey to the final, paving the way for an exciting match as they look to make more recent history for the club.
“I think a key feature for us is the versatility we have. We have match winners all the way up and down the team. It has been a while since we have won this competition, but we are very confident and very excited that we can step up when it matters.” Monger said.
Chisholm Oval has been confirmed by Cricket ACT as the Grand Final venue.
As Grand Final day approaches, we cannot wait to see our John Gallop Cup finalists battle it out on Sunday in a match that will not only determine the season's champion but also honour the legacy of John Gallop and the rich history of cricket in the ACT.
